Volunteer With Us!

Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts owes much of its success to the many volunteers that have painted and built sets, ushered, promoted shows, sewn costumes, served on the board, and so much more!  There are an infinite number of ways that you can support the playhouse with your time and talents.  Below are just a few of the most common.

Front of House (Ushers, Will Call, Concessions)

For weekend performances of our Mainstage and our School of Theatre productions, we need ushers, will-call, concessions and event sales volunteers.  These are the people that serve as the face of the theatre to welcome our audience members and to make sure that the lobby and house are ready.  Will-call volunteers hand our pre-purchased tickets to patrons upon arrival,  Ushers direct audience members to their seats, hand out programs and assist with any audience concerns during the performances.  Front of House volunteers also help with selling concessions during intermissions of Mainstage performances as well as selling Matthews Playhouse merchandise before and after shows and during intermissions.

For school shows during the weekday mornings, we need volunteers to facilitate the traffic of busses from area schools and to help children and teachers into the theater.  We also need ushers to seat children as quickly as possible and to help provide theatre information to school staff.

Scene Shop Help (Construction & Painting)

We are always in need of help at the scene shop with building sets, painting scenery and gathering props for our productions. We also need assistance with loading in sets before every production goes up and striking the sets after we close. No experience is necessary, but if you have skills in art, painting, carpentry etc., this would be a great opportunity for you. The scene shop is open most days of the week, typically a month prior to a production.

Committee Volunteers

Matthews Playhouse needs volunteers for all of our committees, which help with various aspects of keeping the theatre running. We actively look to engage business professionals, parents, and members of our community to assist us in maintaining a "margin of excellence" in our programming.

Volunteer Committee

This committee is inclusive of several aspects of volunteerism at the theatre.

  • Auditions: Volunteers assist in coordinating and providing support during the audition process for all shows.

  • Recruitment: Actively seek out those who would be a good fit to our team of volunteers and encourage them to get more involved.
