Explore the art of bringing scenes to life in this comprehensive 8-week acting course taught by award-winning performer Brooke McCarthy.

Take your acting skills to the next level with our Scene Study course, designed for adult actors
eager to deepen their craft. Building on foundational concepts like Stanislavsky, Meisner, and
Viewpoints, this class will focus on analyzing, rehearsing, and performing dynamic scenes from
contemporary plays. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced performer, you'll refine your
ability to create authentic, compelling characters and strengthen your collaborative skills through
storytelling. 

 

No prior experience is required. Participants should come to the course with an open mind, a willingness to take risks, and a commitment to active participation. The course will culminate in a showcase of rehearsed scenes from class with an invited
audience.

    toolkit.

  • Experience actors looking to refresh skills and break free from habits.

  • Non-performers seeking to cultivate a new hobby or become more comfortable with public speaking.​​

Schedule and Format

  • Meets once a week for 8 weeks from March 3rd - April 21

  • Each class is 2 hours

  • This class will culminate in a live student showcase on the last day of class (Monday, April 21st)

  • Ensure you can make all the scheduled classes and the showcase before registering.

 

Learning Goals

Through a series of interactive exercises, ensemble activities, and scene work, we’ll:

  • Explore the actor’s tools of voice and body to create dynamic, authentic performances.

  • Analyze scripts for character objectives, relationships, and subtext to deepen scene understanding.

  • Develop techniques for building believable and engaging characters through Stanislavsky-based methods.

  • Strengthen active listening and responsiveness through Meisner exercises.

  • Experiment with physicality and spatial awareness using Viewpoints to enhance storytelling.

  • Collaborate effectively with scene partners to build trust and connection on stage.

  • Refine emotional truth and vulnerability in performance through in-depth rehearsal techniques.

  • Apply feedback and self-reflection to grow as a thoughtful, versatile actor.

  • Learn to make bold, specific acting choices that serve the scene and its narrative.

  • Perform a fully realized scene in a showcase, demonstrating growth and confidence.​

  • Script Analysis Principles (Beats, Tactics, Objectives)

  • Scene Work Exercise

  • Memorization Techniques

  • Scene & Partner Assignments

  • Initial Scene Reads
     

Week 4

  • Text Work (Operative Words)

  • Meisner Scene Work

  • Vocal Dynamics (Linklater)

 

Week 5

  • Scene Work: Initial Blocking & Objectives

 

Week 6

  • Scene Work: Bold Exploration (Laban & Big Bad Actor)

 

Week 7

  • Scene Work with Constructive Feedback

 

Week 8

  • Final Rehearsals & Class Show

  • Final performances of rehearsed scenes from class with an invited audience
