Playwright Spotlight: Kenyatt M. Godbolt

Kenyatt hopes KINGS WITHOUT A QUEEN can teach individuals to forgive their parents while providing insight to understand their flaws. Children need love and support when they are young and even more when they approach adulthood. Kenyatt expressed his inspiration for writing the play, which stemmed from his life experiences of growing up on Long Island, New York in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

David, the main character, is a forty-eight-year-old man who is on the cusp of retirement from the New York City Department of Corrections. However, his wife of twenty plus years is divorcing him for a variety of reasons. He cheated, stayed out late, and worked nights for most of their marriage. To make matters worse, almost immediately after his wife filed for divorce, David “accidently” impregnated the mother of his oldest son’s girlfriend! David is struggling to accept responsibility for his actions and parent his two teenage sons without the help of his ex-wife.

Kenyatt M. Godbolt, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and owner of Godbolt Consultants, PLLC. Godbolt Consultants, PLLC provides speech and language services for children with communication delays in Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

Kenyatt currently resides in Concord, NC with his wife, Crystal, and two children, Samira and Kenyatt (KJ). KINGS WITHOUT A QUEEN is his first stage play.
