Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Embark on an enchanting journey through Roald Dahl's beloved children's novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Audiences will be captivated as Charlie Bucket and his friends venture into the whimsical world of Willy Wonka's iconic Chocolate Factory. Through vibrant characters and stunning visuals, this production celebrates teamwork, self-confidence, and the joy of understanding others. This delectable chocolate-candy fantasy promises to be delightful fun for all! Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Homeschool shows at Matthews Playhouse allow homeschoolers to attend daytime school shows at a discounted rate. Bringing your group to a Matthews Playhouse school show performance will enhance and support the curriculum and skills that arts education gives our children.

Scrooge! The Musical

​The timeless musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is back, bringing its classic tale to the stage once more! This beloved story follows the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who, on one fateful Christmas Eve, is visited by three spirits. These ghostly encounters lead him on a journey through his past, present, and future, ultimately resulting in a profound transformation and experience of redemption. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Field Trip Policies

  • Weekday performances are for school groups of 20 or more

  • Cost is $12.00 per person, including teachers, parents & chaperones

  • Chaperones must be paid for with the school payment

  • Teachers please collect the money from parents/chaperones before the day of the show

  • Children under 3 are not permitted to attend school performances

  • Payment is due 2 weeks prior to the performance

  • Additional seats may be purchased by groups based on availability

On Performance Day

  • The theatre is located in the Matthews Community Center at 100 McDowell St. E. Matthews, NC 28105

  • Please plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before the show starts

  • Buses can drop off at the circular drive in front of the Matthews Community Center

  • After dropping off, drivers will need to park the buses next door in the church parking lot. Buses will return 10 minutes before the end of the show to pick up the students.

  • Each group has a pre-assigned seating assignment, so you must wait to be seated by an usher.

  • Seats are assigned based on the date we received your signed contract.

  • If your group has wheelchairs or needs special accommodations, please notify the office at least one week in advance

Fall 2024 Semester: Tuesdays: September 24*, October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12 (The Showcase will be held Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.)

 

Winter 2024/2025  Semester: The Winter Semester offers fresh content, ensuring students can enjoy both semesters without repeating material. Tuesdays: December 3*, 10, 17 (No Classes December 24, 31). January 7, 14, 21, 28, February 4th (The Showcase date will be held Tuesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m.)

DANCE (Ages 4-6)

Matthews Playhouse Education Creative Movement Class: Welcome to our Creative Movement Dance Class, designed especially for young dancers aged 4-6! This class is all about exploring the joy of movement through music while developing essential listening skills and the ability to follow directions. Students will embark on a delightful journey as they listen to music and learn basic dance moves inspired by musical theatre, ballet, and jazz. Through playful activities and imaginative exercises, dancers will develop coordination, rhythm, and spatial awareness while fostering their creativity and self-expression. Join us as we twirl, leap, and dance our way into a world of imagination and fun!

MUSIC (Ages 4-6)

Class Time: 1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m

Class Fee: $80.00 per semester

Junior Jammers: Junior Jammers is a foundational music education program for 4 to 6 year old students.  Children work with age appropriate instruments, focus on the concepts of rhythm and pitch, notes (whole, half, quarter) gain an understanding of the importance of listening to create music and learn musical vocabulary.  Class taught by Bold Music Lessons Junior Jammers teaching team. 

ART (Ages 4-6)

Class Time: 2:00 p.m. - 2:45 p.m

Class Fee: $80.00 per semester

Coloring on Canvas: In this class, students will be introduced to acrylic paint and color theory. They will learn about the properties, uses, and safety guidelines of acrylic paint, as well as the concepts of primary and secondary colors using the RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) color wheel. Through hands-on activities, students will engage in color mixing exercises using acrylic paint to create a color wheel, reinforcing their understanding of color theory principles.

ACTING (Ages 4-6)

Class Time: 2:45-3:30p.m.

Class Fee: $80.00 per semester

Storytime Adventures: Welcome to Storytime Theatre Adventures, where young imaginations take center stage! In this delightful class designed for 4-6 year olds, each week is a new journey into the world of storytelling. Through the magic of books, music, and creative movement, children will embark on exciting adventures, bringing beloved stories to life right before their eyes. From whimsical characters to daring escapades, every session promises laughter, learning, and lots of fun. Through these interactive experiences, little ones will not only strengthen their imagination but also build confidence and enhance reading comprehension skills. Join us as we spark creativity and ignite a love for storytelling in the hearts of our youngest performers!

Bold Music Junior - Vocal Ensemble: Join Bold Music Junior, a dynamic vocal exploration group designed for students aged 7 to 13! This program offers an exploration of a variety of music concepts, terminology, and healthy vocal techniques. Students will learn the fundamentals of strengthening vocal muscles, breathing techniques, perfecting pronunciation and enunciation, and enhancing communication fluency through engaging activities and exercises. Throughout the course, participants will delve into choral-style popular music selections from current Broadway shows and animated movie scores, preparing for an exciting choral performance. Taught by experienced instructors from Bold Music Lessons, students will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound skills on stage for family and friends, receiving a certificate upon completion.

Youth Dance Class: Step into the world of dance with our Youth Dance Class, tailored for students aged 7-13! This class provides a welcoming environment for dancers of all levels, including those who are new to dancing. Building upon the foundations of our younger dancers, this class introduces more complex movements and techniques while exploring a variety of dance styles such as ballet, jazz, and contemporary. Students will refine their skills and expand their repertoire through engaging choreography, dynamic exercises, and combinations designed to challenge and inspire. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in a showcase of skills for family and friends, celebrating their progress and achievements throughout the program. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of achievement, recognizing their dedication and growth as dancers.

Acting Adventures: Do you have a homeschooler aged 7-13 with a passion for performance? Join us for an exciting journey through the world of acting in our Acting Adventures program! Each session is packed with engaging activities and valuable lessons to spark their creativity and build essential skills like reading comprehension, concentration, public speaking, and confidence. Explore the fundamentals of acting through fun exercises and games, where students will learn to develop characters, express emotions, and tell stories on stage. Our supportive environment encourages teamwork and fosters friendships as they discover the joy of acting together. Whether they're new to acting or already have some experience, Acting Adventures offers a welcoming space for young performers to shine and grow. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of achievement. *Please note that students in this program must be proficient readers.

Furthermore, students will become acquainted with the rich history of color theory, tracing its development from ancient times to modern theories. As they embark on their journey through color theory, students will also familiarize themselves with the properties and versatile techniques of acrylic paint, laying a solid foundation for their artistic endeavors. Students will create a piece to be displayed in our gallery at the showcase for family and friends. This class welcomes both serious-minded students who are new to art and those with prior experience, emphasizing the importance of attendance for optimal learning and creative expression.

Whether you're a beginning singer or an experienced vocalist, all are welcome to join this journey of musical exploration. Throughout the semester, students will delve into a diverse repertoire, from contemporary hits to classic favorites, under the guidance of experienced instructors from Bold Music Lessons. Emphasizing class attendance and dedication to assignments outside of class, participants will receive a grade at the end of the semester, which parents can use to best fit their homeschool program needs. Join us as we work to elevate our voices and showcase our musical talents on stage for family and friends.

Advanced Dance Class: Our Advanced Dance Class is tailored for dancers aged 13-18! Whether you're an experienced dancer looking to refine your skills or new to dance, our class welcomes students of all levels. This class offers a diverse range of dance techniques, including jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip-hop, modern, and tap, as you explore the art of storytelling through movement. Each session focuses on mastering specific dance styles, accompanied by stylized choreography and combinations inspired by popular musical theatre shows. Additionally, students will learn the importance of stretches and healthy body choices to support their dance practice. Class attendance is a priority, and serious-minded students who are dedicated to working on their skills outside of class rehearsals are encouraged to join. Upon completion of the program, students will receive grades, recognizing their commitment and progress as dancers. Parents are welcome to accept or decline the grade given to best fit their homeschool program needs. Matthews Playhouse Acting Intensive: Calling all high school students with a passion for the stage! Join us for an immersive Theatre Intensive program where you'll delve deep into the art of performance. Our comprehensive curriculum covers a wide range of theatrical styles, from classic to contemporary, and introduces you to influential playwrights, including the works of Shakespeare. Through intensive workshops and rehearsals, you'll refine your acting techniques, explore character development, and work to improve your skills in improvisation. This class will touch on a wide range of theatre, from the rich tapestry of theatre history to learning about different performance traditions from around the world. As you hone your craft, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students on exciting projects and showcase your talents on stage for family and friends. With guidance from experienced instructors and a commitment to excellence, Theatre Intensive prepares you for a future in the performing arts and beyond. Assignments will be given, so students who participate need to be serious and committed to attendance and completion. Upon completion, participants will receive grades, and our program curriculum matches North Carolina standards.

Advanced Art Class: In this specialized class designed for students aged 13 to 18, participants will immerse themselves in an in-depth exploration of advanced color theory and artistic techniques. Going beyond surface understanding, students will delve into the intricate interplay of color relationships, mastering not only the CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) color wheel but also delving into the profound impact of color psychology on visual composition. Engaging in a dynamic blend of structured exercises and open-ended projects, students will refine their understanding and application of color theory in ways that transcend traditional boundaries.
