9th-12th Grade Musical Theatre & Dance Classes

Matthews Playhouse is excited to offer the following wide range of courses for our High School students, specializing in Musical Theatre, Acting, Dance and Technical Theatre. Our 9th-12th Grade Programming is for serious-minded theatre students who are committed to attending classes each week and spending time outside of the classroom working on material. No experience is necessary.

**Students who participate in the Fall 2024 and/or Winter 2025 School of Theatre classes are invited to audition for the 2025 Spring School of Theatre (SOT) Productions, and will be eligible for a role based on availability. Receiving a role is not guaranteed**

9th-12th Grade Musical Theatre 101- Introduction to Musical Theatre (First Year Level)

Offered: Fall 2024; Tuesdays

Fee: $250

Course Description: Musical Theatre 101

Welcome to the exciting world of musical theatre! In this foundational course, students will embark on a comprehensive exploration of musical theatre performance. They will begin by honing their acting skills through scene study and character development exercises. Simultaneously, students will delve into the fundamentals of dance technique, learning basic steps and movement sequences. Additionally, vocal instruction will focus on developing proper singing technique and vocal projection. Through a balanced curriculum of acting, dance, and vocal instruction, students will lay the groundwork for future success in musical theatre performance.

9th-12th Grade Musical Theatre 102- Intermediate Musical Theatre Performance (First Year Level)

Offered: Winter 2025; Tuesdays

Fee: $250

Course Description: Musical Theatre 102

Building upon the foundation laid in Level 101, students will continue to refine their skills in acting, dance, and vocal performance. They will deepen their understanding of character development and storytelling through advanced scene study and improvisation exercises. In dance instruction, students will expand their repertoire of dance styles and techniques, learning more complex choreography and movement sequences. Vocal instruction will focus on developing greater vocal control and expression, as students explore a wider range of musical styles and genres. Through immersive rehearsals and ensemble work, students will integrate acting, dance, and vocal skills to create dynamic musical theatre performances.

10th-12th Grade Musical Theatre 201- Advanced Musical Theatre Performance (Second Year Level)

Offered: Fall 2024; Thursdays

Fee: $250

Course Description: Musical Theatre 201

In this semester, students will focus on elevating their skills in acting, dance, and vocal performance to an advanced level. They will engage in intensive training in acting techniques, refining their ability to embody characters and convey emotion on stage. Dance instruction will challenge students to master complex choreography and movement sequences, incorporating elements of storytelling and expression into their dance performance. Vocal instruction will focus on developing greater vocal range, control, and versatility, as students explore a wider repertoire of musical styles and genres. Through collaborative rehearsals and individual coaching sessions, students will integrate acting, dance, and vocal skills to create compelling and dynamic musical theatre performances.

10th-12th Grade Musical Theatre 202- Masterclass in Musical Theatre Performance (Second Year Level)

Offered: Winter 2025; Thursdays

Fee: $250

Course Description: Musical Theatre 202

The culmination of the sophomore year, this semester offers students a masterclass in musical theatre performance. Building upon the skills and techniques acquired in previous semesters, students will have the opportunity to apply their acting, dance, and vocal skills in a series of challenging performance projects. They will explore advanced acting techniques, refine their dance technique, and further develop their vocal prowess through immersive rehearsals and ensemble work. Emphasis will be placed on integrating acting, dance, and vocal skills to create cohesive and compelling musical theatre performances that engage and captivate audiences.

Offered: Fall 2024 & Winter 2025; Mondays

Fee: $160

Course Description: 

Join our intermediate dance class tailored for high school students, where you'll explore a rich array of dance styles including jazz, ballet, hip-hop, and more. Led by experienced instructors, each session focuses on mastering techniques while delving into the vibrant world of musical theater.

Immerse yourself in the rhythm as you learn dynamic combinations inspired by popular musicals, adding depth and storytelling to your dance repertoire. This class emphasizes weekly technique refinement to enhance your confidence and skill as a dancer and artist.

Whether you're honing your abilities or discovering a new passion, our supportive environment nurtures growth without a final sharing at the end of the course, allowing you to focus solely on personal improvement and artistic development.
