Mainstage Productions Presents

Matthews Playhouse Mainstage Productions features titles that are typically family focused, but select production titles can also be geared towards adults or young people. These shows have open auditions and feature actors from around the Matthews region. Mainstage productions typically run 2-3 weekends with both evening and matinee performances.

JUNIE B. JONES IS NOT A CROOK

Meet the World’s Funniest Kindergartner—Junie B. Jones! A terrible thing happened to Junie B.! And it’s called—someone took her new black furry mittens! And they kept them! They didn’t even put them in the Lost and Found at school. So when Junie B. finds a wonderful pen on the floor, she should be allowed to keep it, too. Right? That’s fair. Right? Right?

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

George Bailey is a small-town banker whose life seems so desperate that he contemplates ending it all. He had always wanted to leave Bedford Falls to see the world, but circumstances and his own good heart led him to stay. He sacrficed his own education for his brother's, kept the family-run savings and loan afloat, protected the town from the greedy banker, and married his childhood sweetheart. As he was preparing to jump from a bridge, his guardian angel intercedes, showing him what life would have been like for the residents of Bedford Falls if he had never been born.

BONNIE AND CLYDE  THE MUSICAL

In Depression-era Texas, a young Bonnie Parker falls in love with Clyde Barrow, a criminal on the run from the law. Their love affair soon spirals out of control, as Bonnie & Clyde commit a series of bank robberies. As their notoriety — and body count — rises, the ill-fated lovers find themselves racing to the top of the Public Enemies list.

FREEDOM TRAIN

Freedom Train is the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railord which smuggled slaves to freedom prior to the American Civil War. Using traditional songs of the period "Freedom Train" recounts a powerful and inspiring tale of courage, dedication, perseverance and the strength of the human spirit.

SOUTH PACIFIC

Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
