 Class Schedule

FALL: Classes held the weeks of September 10 - December 14, 2018
       ***NO CLASS THANKSGIVING WEEK***

WINTER: Classes held the weeks of January 7 - February 22, 2019

SPRING:  Audition for one of the 4 School of Theatre productions.

  • Rehearsals for the spring shows March 4 - April 14, 2019
  • Rehearsals will be held 5 days a week
  • NEW THIS YEAR - Actors will be allowed only 2 conflicts during the rehearsal period 
  • Shows perform the weekend of April 5 or April 12, 2019.

 

Tuition

$400 for the school year (20 weeks)

$75 production fee to participate in the Spring shows 



Acting 2

Grades 2-5
Wednesdays 4:30-6:00pm
 
Advanced storytelling skills will be taught with the addition of telling an original story created by each student using a given theme.  Students will use skills learned in level one to create their very own fairytale, fable or story.


Acting 3

Grades 3-6
Tuesdays 4:30-6:00pm
 
This class will include an introduction ti improvisation, character creations, and creating an ensemble.  The focus is on showing the 'Who' through voice and movement; showing the 'Where' by how one relates to the space; showing the 'What' bt creating and solving a conflict during a scene.

Grades 5-8
Thursdays 6:00-8:00pm
 
This class will continue with advanced improvisation and continuing to work on creating a trunkful of characters.  The class will use current events to create a news show, reality show, improv videos and snapchats while advancing the skills in short form improvisation.  Long form improvisation will be introduced.

Grades 7-9
Tuesdays 6:00-8:00pm
 
This class will focus on stage movement using techniques and activities from renowned directors and theatre movement teachers.  Class will continue to work on improvisational skills and honing those skills to create five to ten minute improvised plays.  Short scripted plays will be analyzed, rehearsed and performed using Chicago's Neo-futurist plays and adapting their 30 plays in 60 minutes.  The Alexander Technique will be introduced, and audition techniques for monologues and cold readings are also included in this class.

Wednesdays 6:00-8:00pm
 

This curriculum for level six includes continued work on at least three of the following:

  • Alexander Technique
  • Audition techniques
  • Scene work using various acting techniques including for example: naturalistic, commedia dell'arte, absurdist, immersive and acting for the camera.
  • Advanced stage movement using techniques and activities from renowned directors and theatre movement teachers.
  • Continued work on improvisational skills and honing those skills to create five to ten minute improvised plays.
  • Short scripted plays will be analyzed, rehearsed and performed using Chicago's Neo-futurist plays and adapt their 30 plays in 60 minutes.

Mondays 6:00-8:00pm
 

An advanced acting and performance company for youth aged 14-18.  Level Seven will focus on the seven C's of performance and life learning:  Character building, Collaboration, Creativity, Community service, Current affairs, Critical thinking and Citizenship.  The school year class will also focus on at least five of the following:

  • Alexander Technique
  • Improvisation
  • Stage movement using Anne Bogart's Viewpoints and other techniques
  • Neo-Futurist Theatre Style
  • Classical and Contemporary scene work using the Stanislavski technique
  • Absurdist theatre
  • Stage fighting
  • Makeup
  • Devised Theatre (Collaborated script created by compant)
  • Directing
  • Audition techniques
  • The Business of Acting

  • Scholarships +

    Partial scholarships are available for Summer camps and will be considered up until May 1st, 2018.  Please contact the Playhouse prior to enrolling in a class, you will be given instructions on enrolling and securing a spot for the class.  Please complete the

    Scholarship Application Form

    and follow the submission guidelines. 

     

  • Refund Policy +

    Cancelations are accepted until 3 weeks (21 days) prior to start of class or camp. If you are unable to cancel at least 3 weeks before the class or camps first day, no refunds will be given. Prior to that time you may receive a refund minus a $25.00 administrative fee.  This $25.00 fee also applies to any changes in class registration not initiated by Matthews Playhouse.

  • Waiting List +

    Full Classes will allow for "Waiting List" enrollment.  The waiting list requires all the same steps as above with the exception of payment.  You will be notified via e-mail and phone call if a position becomes available.  If a position does become available you can make your payment by logging onto the website and going to Account Information Menu and "Your Enrolled Classes"  where you see the "Pay Now" button.
